Other Roles and Purposes of Heart-Oriented Meditations

The third purpose of heart meditations is that they help us to mature psychologically and spiritually on our way toward unity consciousness. This is highly important: these meditations don’t just make us leap elegantly to unity consciousness for the simple reason that we are unable to do so. We all start with certain inhibitions, the greatest of which is our selfishness, which is greatly challenged by the extreme selfless nature of unity consciousness and compassion. In this sense, heart chakra techniques are soothing and comforting, and they are intense awakeners that pull us out of our comfort zone. Ultimately, their task is to genuinely evolve our hearts.

In addition, these meditations help us to realize true intimacy, which is the intimacy of the one heart: the experience of sameness in the space between yourself and others. It is true that as long as we are in the body, we can never return to the original state and attain perfect oneness with others. Doing so is not only impossible but also unhealthy. We all need the force of separation to be active in our lives in order to maintain our unique perspectives and individual boundaries. But the profound intimacy enabled by some of these meditations opens the space for us to also achieve a realization of the underlying reality of the one in the many, and to even communicate with each other from this space.

The fifth function of heart chakra techniques is meditation as a healer. Generally speaking, meditation is also a therapeutic process, and at least in some respects, it may replace certain therapeutic processes when used correctly. This group of meditations reveals to us the healing power of meditation. They activate the heart as the element of our being that experiences an unbreakable connection with life and every living soul. Energetically and essentially, the heart is forever connected by an unbroken thread to all others, to the divine, and to one’s self. So with the aid of these meditations, we are able to melt away the pain of separation and loneliness that has been caused by the excessive activity of the force of separation in our life. Put simply, these meditations show us that deep down, we are never alone and we are never really separate. They also help us to wipe away memories of the past, develop forgiveness, overcome disappointments and betrayals, and dissolve the protective wall we have erected around our hearts. The last aspect of their healing power lies in their ability to facilitate self-love.

In addition to healing power, these meditations reveal our heart power. This is the secret of the heart’s innermost layer, the inner cave of the heart: an indestructible, unbeatable presence, which has nothing to do with the well-known fragility of the human heart. Based on this discovery that the heart is our greatest source of power and motivation, one more purpose is to make the heart the active leader of our life, first by centering ourselves in the heart, and then by being able to make heart choices.
